Many pool leaks remain hidden because the escaping water drains into the soil, moves beneath paving or follows underground pipe trenches away from the damaged area.
A leak may also occur inside the pool shell, around a fitting or behind the skimmer box. These faults can release water below the surface without producing visible dripping around the pool.
The absence of a wet area does not mean the pool is only losing water through evaporation. Consistent topping up, a falling water level and unexplained chemical dilution can all indicate a concealed leak.
Pool pipes, seals, fittings and internal surfaces are exposed to water pressure, ground movement, temperature changes and regular equipment operation.
Small pipe cracks, loose fittings and failed seals may initially release only a limited amount of water. The leak can gradually worsen as the damaged area moves or deteriorates.

A bucket test can help compare pool water loss with normal evaporation.
Fill a bucket with pool water and place it securely on a pool step so that part of the bucket is submerged. Mark the water level inside the bucket and the pool level outside it.
Leave the pool under stable conditions for approximately 24 hours without adding water, backwashing or allowing heavy swimming.

A pool can have more than one leak, so the water loss may change without stopping completely.
The level at which the water stabilises can help narrow down the possible source.
Water that stops near the skimmer may point towards the skimmer box or connected plumbing. A level near a pool light, return jet or vacuum fitting may suggest a fault around that height.
If the water continues below all wall fittings, the leak may be connected to the pool floor, lower pipework, main drain or deeper structural damage.
The stopping point is a diagnostic clue rather than final proof.
An automatic filling system can make a leaking pool appear normal because it replaces the lost water before the level drops noticeably.
The first sign may be a higher water bill, frequent filler operation or changing pool chemistry.
Temporarily isolating the filler and monitoring the water level can help reveal whether the pool is losing water. The filler should not be left off if the water is already close to falling below the skimmer.
A renovated or resurfaced pool should not require frequent topping up beyond normal evaporation.
